What is Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)?

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a diagnostic test that analyses a sample of your hair to assess your body's mineral and toxic metal levels. Unlike blood tests, which provide a snapshot of your current mineral status, HTMA offers a longer-term perspective as hair can store minerals and toxins over time.




What Does HTMA Test For?

HTMA can test for a wide range of essential minerals and toxic metals, including:

  • Essential minerals: Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Copper, Zinc, Manganese, Chromium, Vanadium, Molybdenum, Boron, Iodine, Lithium, Phosphorus, Selenium, Strontium, Sulphur, Cobalt, Ron, Germanium, Rubidium and Zirconium.

  • Toxic metals: Aluminium, Antimony, Arsenic, Barium, Beryllium, Bismuth, Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Platinum, Thallium, Thorium, Uranium, Nickel, Silver, Tin and Titanium.

 

Conditions Where HTMA Can Be Helpful

HTMA can be a valuable tool for understanding and addressing a variety of health conditions, including:

  • Chronic fatigue: Mineral imbalances can contribute to fatigue and low energy levels.

  • Thyroid disorders: HTMA can help identify mineral deficiencies or excesses that may be affecting thyroid function.

  • Adrenal fatigue: Adrenal health is closely linked to mineral balance, and HTMA can provide insights into adrenal function.

  • Sleep disturbances: Minerals like magnesium, calcium, and zinc play crucial roles in sleep regulation. HTMA for children

HTMA is my favourite functional test to run on children as it is non-invasive, economical and provides the most useful information when working with children on sleep, mood, behaviours, learning and nutrient intake.

Children are more susceptible to heavy metal accumulation for several reasons:

  1. Rapid growth and development: Children are growing and developing at a much faster rate than adults, which means they absorb nutrients and other substances at a higher rate. This also makes them more vulnerable to the harmful effects of heavy metals.

  2. Smaller body size: Children have smaller bodies, which means that even relatively small amounts of heavy metals can have a more significant impact on their health.

  3. Immature organs and systems: Children's organs and systems are still developing, making them more sensitive to the toxic effects of heavy metals.

  4. Behaviour: Children may be more likely to put objects in their mouths, chew things they shouldn’t or play in contaminated areas, increasing their exposure to heavy metals through:

    • Contaminated food and water

    • Lead-based paint

    • Toys and household products

    • Environmental pollution

 

How Does HTMA Work?

To perform an HTMA, a small sample of hair (equivalent to a tablespoon) is collected from as close to the scalp as possible and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The laboratory uses specialized techniques to measure the levels of various minerals and toxic metals in the hair. The results are then interpreted by a qualified healthcare professional who can provide personalized recommendations based on the findings.

 

Is HTMA useful in adults?

While children may be particularly vulnerable to heavy metal accumulation due to their rapid growth and development, adults can also experience negative health effects from mineral imbalances and heavy metal exposure.

Here are some ways HTMA can benefit adults:

  • Identifying mineral deficiencies: Adults may experience deficiencies in essential minerals that can lead to various health problems, including fatigue, weakened immune function, and hormonal imbalances. HTMA can help identify these deficiencies and guide appropriate nutritional interventions.

  • Assessing heavy metal exposure: Adults can be exposed to heavy metals through contaminated food, water, air, and occupational exposure. HTMA can help assess heavy metal levels in the body and guide detoxification strategies if necessary.

  • Understanding chronic health conditions: Certain chronic health conditions, such as autoimmune diseases, digestive disorders, and neurological problems, may be linked to mineral imbalances or heavy metal toxicity. HTMA can provide insights into these potential underlying factors.

 

What does treatment look like after HTMA results?

Depending on the different results, treatment usually looks like increasing intake of deficient minerals through diet where possible and through supplementation for a period of time. If there are high levels of heavy metals we first try to identify the source to reduce exposure. Some very gentle detoxification support may be given to help reduce the levels of heavy metals. This should not be attempted without supervision of a practitioner as there can be negative side effects from detoxing too fast or unsafely.
